Nagano-ken's spectacular mountains are home to several of Japan's best ski resorts and onsen villages. In the northeastern corner of the prefecture is the delightful Nozawa Onsen , self-proclaimed home of Japanese skiing and renowned hot-spring village, with thirteen free bathhouses to dip into. West of Nagano is the skiing area known as Hakuba , a valley with seven different resorts to choose from, the most popular being Happo-one. Shiga Kogen , 20km north of Nagano, is Japan's biggest skiing area, with 22 interconnected resorts sharing the same lift ticket. It lies within the Joshinetsu Kogen National Park, where you'll also find the village of Yudanaka Onsen , famous for its "snow monkeys", who splash about in their very own rotemburo .
