Despite its rugged coastal scenery and occasionally spectacular views of Mount Fuji, west Izu remains far less developed than the eastern side - with the exception of Dogashima , whose pitted, pine-tufted islands draw the coach parties in droves. This lack of development is largely due to the difficulties of access, since public transport is limited to slow bus routes between the main settlements and infrequent ferry services. If you've got time to spare, it's worth taking a couple of days to meander between the traditional fishing ports that punctuate the journey north.
