Though Shimoda is a popular hot-spring resort, onsen connoisseurs will find better bathing a little further north at Rendaiji Onsen . This village, accessible by train or bus, has a collection of classy ryokan, several of which open their rotemburo to the public. Heading in the opposite direction, south Izu's rocky, indented coastline shelters some of the peninsula's best beaches and has stretches of dramatic scenery around Iro-zaki , its southernmost tip. Though a car is the ideal way of getting around, all the places mentioned below are covered by local buses; if you're travelling by bus and combining this area with Dogashima , it's worth investing in a "Minami Izu Free Pass" .
