Travelling north from Dogashima the road hugs the coast, climbing over headlands and then zigzagging down to fishing villages squeezed into sheltered bays. At TOI , the largest settlement in west Izu, the main road turns inland, but a few buses continue on up the coast to HEDA , a very picturesque village, with onward bus connections to Shuzenji; these buses are few and far between, so check the timetables before setting off. Both Toi and Heda lie on the ferry route from Dogashima to Numazu, while Toi also has regular sailings to Tagonoura-ko (near Shin-Fuji Station on the Shinkansen line) on the north coast of Suruga Bay.
