South of Mount Fuji and 90km west of Tokyo is the lakeland and mountain area known as HAKONE . Even though there's nothing here that you absolutely must see while in Japan, you're bound to enjoy a visit to this region, especially if you follow the well-established day-trip route, which combines rides on several trains or buses, a funicular, cable car and pirate ship. You can also take in the lake, Ashino-ko , numerous onsen , some excellent walks, several art museums, and - weather permitting - great views of nearby Mount Fuji. There's so much to do that an overnight stop is best, especially if you want to unwind at one of Hakone's top-notch hotels and ryokan, all with their own hot-spring baths. Be aware, though, that the region is always busy on weekends and holidays; if you want to avoid the crowds, come during the week. Excellent transport links mean that you can stay pretty much anywhere and go where you want within the day.
