Fifa World Cup 2002: Venues Near Tokyo
Apart from Yokohama there are three other World Cup stadia within daily travelling distance of Tokyo - Kashima in Ibaraki-ken, around 80km east of the capital; Urawa in Saitama-ken, some 20km north; and Fukuroi in Shizuoka-ken, 170km southwest along the coast. To get to Kashima , take a JR train to Kashima-jingu Station where you'll transfer to the Kashima Rinkai Tetsudo line to Kashima Soccer Stadium ( www.pref.ibaraki.jp/prog/wldcup/English/index.htm ), the ground being a five-minute walk from the station. Alternatively there will be direct bus services from the south exit of Tokyo Station to Kashima-jingu Station where, again, there'll be a local bus to the 43,000-seater stadium. The easiest way of travelling to the 63,000-capacity stadium in Urawa is to hop on the Namboku subway line, making sure you're on a through-train to the new Urawa-Misono Station on the Saitama Railway line. The stadium ( www.2002saitama.com/e-index.html ) is a fifteen-minute walk from the station. The 50,000-seater Ecopa stadium ( www2.shizuokanet.ne.jp/worldcup/english/index.html ) in Fukuroi involves the longest journey. The fastest route is to take a Shinkansen to Kakegawa (1hr 51min on the Kodama service), then transfer to the local JR Tokaido Honsen line to reach the new stadium station.
