The horseshoe bay of Lagundri lies 12km west of Teluk Dalam, the largest town in southern Nias, served by buses from Gunung Sitoli. From Teluk Dalam, frequent buses run to LAGUNDRI (Rp500), stopping by the small bridge at the Jamborai/Botohili junction, where the Trans-Nias highway starts. (This is also the place to wait for buses out of Lagundri.) Lagundri has been famous among surfers since the 1970s, though it's at neighbouring Jamborai , on the western edge of the bay, that the waves actually break. In July and August the waves are over 4m high and travel for up to 150m - fantastic for experienced surfers, but not a good place for beginners. The accommodation at Lagundri Bay consists almost entirely of simple wooden beachside bungalows. There are over fifty of them stretching out all along the bay, with a particularly high concentration at Jamborai. Most have electricity now, cost next to nothing (usually Rp1000 per night, or free if you stay for a fortnight or more), though you'll be expected to eat there too. Tales of pickpockets and robbers are numerous.
