Kerinci-Seblat national park , Sumatra's largest, is named after its two highest mountains, Gunung Kerinci (3805m), north of Sungaipenuh, and Gunung Seblat (2383m), much further south. It's a brilliant destination for nature-spotting and trekking, and the scenery is particularly lush. It's also said to harbour the terrestrial primate orang pendek (short man), apparently a little over 1m high, which is well-known to local people but has never been photographed. Scores of treks are possible, ranging from easy one- and two-day walks along well-used trails between villages where traditional longhouses and magic ceremonies still survive, to forest treks of a week or more. The national park office in Sungaipenuh has plenty of information about the myriad options and can recommend guides. Two of the more popular treks are those up Gunung Kerinci and to Danau Gunung Tujuh , both of which begin in the town of Kersik Tua.
