Sumatra Pulau Batam and Ferries To Singapore

Pulau Batam and Ferries To Singapore

Apart from its proximity to Singapore, just 20km at the closest point, and usefulness as a major staging post on to Indonesia, there's little to recommend Pulau Batam to travellers, and nothing to make staying overnight worthwhile. Most travellers arrive at the port of SEKUPANG , from where boats run to Singapore .

The international terminal at Sekupang runs boats to and from Singapore's World Trade Centre (7.30am-7pm; to 8pm on Mon & Wed), and the domestic terminal (200m away) operates services to and from Sumatran destinations like Pekanbaru and Dumai. The port for Tanjung Pinang on Pulau Bintan is TELAGA PUNGGUR on the east coast, accessible only by taxi (Rp15,000 from Nongsa, Rp15,000-20,000 from Nagoya and Rp30,000 from Sekupang).

There are several other ferry terminals on the island. The international ferry terminal at Nongsa (tel 0778/761777) runs services to and from Tanah Merah terminal in Singapore. The Waterfront ferry terminal, TELUK SENIMBA , has services to the World Trade Centre in Singapore (8.45am-8.30pm). There's also a ferry service (8am-8pm) from BATU AMPAR to Singapore's World Trade Centre. The Pelni boats KM Kelud and KM Sinabung operate from Batam ; booking is through Andalan Aksa Tour, Komplex New Holiday, Block B, 9 (tel 0778/454181).

If you get stuck on Pulau Batam, you can stay in the island's main town, NAGOYA (also known as Lubuk Baja), on the northeast coast of the island, though it

is inconvenient for all transport points and the room charges are extortionate, with nothing below Rp40,000. The scruffy Peningapan Gajah Mada (tel 0778/425270; $5-10), Komplex Windsor Square Blok B, 77-78, is one such place, though at least it is central and has some helpful staff. Wisma Bougenville, Komplex Nagoya Business Centre, Block 11, 28/29 (tel 0778/426682; Rp55,000) is a little more expensive but better value; rooms are en-suite and some have hot water and air-con.
