Pulau Samosir is the spiritual heartland of the Toba Batak people, and one of the most fascinating, pleasant and laid-back holiday resorts in Indonesia. Most travellers stay on the touristy eastern shores of Toba, where there's a string of enjoyable resorts, from Tomok in the south, to Tuk Tuk, Ambarita and the island's cultural centre, Simanindo , on Samosir's northern shore. Despite the vast number of hotels and restaurants, the tourist infrastructure on Samosir is actually fairly poor and you can only change money and make international calls at private places charging ridiculous fees. The only place with an Internet connection, the Tabo Guesthouse, charges Rp100,000 per hour. It's a great place for shopping though, with dozens of places selling Batak woodcarvings, weavings and other souvenirs.
accommodation on Samosir is excellent value, and it can be even better if you're good at bargaining, especially in the low season. Choose your accommodation carefully, as in most cases the hotel owner will insist that you eat in their restaurant every evening. Public buses run throughout the day from Pangururan to Tomok (5.30am-5.30pm) and vice versa (8am-9pm), a ninety-minute journey (Rp2000) round the north coast via Ambarita and Simanindo. None of the buses drive through Tuk Tuk.
