Bukit Lawang Practicalities

Practicalities

Bukit Lawang village is little more than a kilometre-long, hotel-lined path running along the eastern side of Sungai Bohorok; it charges a one-off Rp1000 entrance fee. Buses from Medan's Pinang Baris terminal and Berastagi (daily tourist bus; 5hr) stop at the southern end of the path in a square dominated by souvenir stalls, a wartel (7am-7pm) and an uninformative tourist office (Mon-Sat 7am-2pm). There is no bank, but the travel agencies all change money.

need a permit to watch the feeding sessions at the rehab centre, costing Rp4500 per day and available from the PHPA Permit Office (daily 7am-5pm) that overlooks the square to the east. Separate trekking permits (Rp4000 per day) are also available here. The permit office is part of the excellent WWF Bohorok Visitor Centre (daily 8am-3pm), which is packed with information about the park and shows a documentary about the Rehabilitation Centre (Mon, Wed & Fri at 8pm).

Bukit Lawang Now

pPamela says "Bukit Lawang suffered a devastating flood in Nov 2003 caused by a dam naturally built up in the jungle that burst its banks with 60' of water that took everyhting in its path.
Sadly hundreds died and the village destroyed.

However, 3.5 yrs later some of the buildings have been repaired and there are about 6-8 guesthouses open for travellers and treks into the jungle are available. it is an amazing place and I have had the opportunity to spend 19 days there in Jan/Feb 2005 and 5 weeks in Sept/Oct 2006.
