Bukit Lawang suffered a devastating flood in Nov 2003 caused by a dam naturally built up in the jungle that burst its banks with 60' of water that took everyhting in its path.
Sadly hundreds died and the village destroyed.
However, 3.5 yrs later some of the buildings have been repaired and there are about 6-8 guesthouses open for travellers and treks into the jungle are available. it is an amazing place and I have had the opportunity to spend 19 days there in Jan/Feb 2005 and 5 weeks in Sept/Oct 2006.
