Tucked away on the easternmost fringes of the Bukit Barisan range, 78km north of Medan, the Orang-Utan Rehabilitation Centre at BUKIT LAWANG is one of the most enjoyable places in North Sumatra and has become a major tourist attraction. The setting for the village, on the eastern banks of the Sungai Bohorok, opposite the forest-clad slopes of Gunung Leuser, is idyllic. The village also contains some of the most charming and inexpensive losmen in Sumatra, with balconies overlooking the river and macaques on the roof looking for food.
Bukit Lawang NowpPamela says "Bukit Lawang suffered a devastating flood in Nov 2003 caused by a dam naturally built up in the jungle that burst its banks with 60' of water that took everyhting in its path.
Sadly hundreds died and the village destroyed.
However, 3.5 yrs later some of the buildings have been repaired and there are about 6-8 guesthouses open for travellers and treks into the jungle are available. it is an amazing place and I have had the opportunity to spend 19 days there in Jan/Feb 2005 and 5 weeks in Sept/Oct 2006.
