Nanga Badau

The ochre-coloured mud-slick running between Putussibau and the ramshackle village of Nanga Badau at the Sarawak border has yet to be sealed, but is served by a daily 8am bemo from Putussibau (7hr). From Nanga Badau, a covered road continues east to Simanggung , just over the border in Sarawak. Nanga's immigration office (8am-5pm)

lies on this road at the eastern end of town. At the moment Nanga Badau is not a designated entry point into Indonesia, though tourists should have no trouble leaving the country from here, and exit formalities are straightforward. There's no public transport to take you into Malaysia, however, and you're not allowed to walk across, so you'll have to try to hitch a lift to the Malaysian border post, where public buses leave regularly for Kuching (9hr). There's no accommodation in Nanga Badau.
