Prambanan Plains other temples

The other ancient sites on the Prambanan Plain (dawn-dusk; free) are not as spectacular as the Shiva Temple, but you are almost certain to be the only person on site. Only the three temples immediately to the north of Prambanan are within easy walking distance of the Shiva Temple, reached via the children's park next to the museum. All three date from the late eighth century, just predating Borobudur. Candi Lumbung consists of sixteen small, crumbling temples surrounding a larger, but equally dilapidated, central temple. Buddhist Sewu once consisted of 240 small shrines surrounding a large, central temple, but has been severely looted. A ten-minute bike ride or thirty-minute walk to the east of Candi Sewu, Candi Plaosan is also surrounded by building debris, but the two-storey building still houses two stone Bodhisattvas.

The other worthwhile ruins (US$5) lie to the south of Prambanan and are best tackled by bicycle. From the village, cycle down the path which begins by the small graveyard to a small village school on the left-hand side (10min). Turn left and after five minutes you reach Candi Sojiwan , a plain, square temple, sparingly decorated with Jataka scenes. Return to the main path and head south towards the foot of the Shiva Plateau. The path to the summit of the plateau and Kraton Ratu Boko is unsuitable for bicycles, so ask to leave them at the house at the bottom. The ruins are in two parts: a series of bathing pools and, 400m to the west, the ceremonial gate that adorns many tourist posters. The views from the kraton are wonderful, as they are from Candi Barong , to the south - to get there, head

west towards the main road, Jalan Raya Piyungan, where you turn left (south) and cycle for 1.5km until a signpost on your left points to Barong, 1km to the east. This candi is actually two hillside Buddhist temples mounted on a raised platform on the southern slopes of the plateau. A little way back along this path and to the south is Banyunibo , a pretty Buddhist shrine dedicated to Tara. From there, head back onto the main road and turn right; Prambanan village lies 2km away.
