Jakarta's Textile Museum (Tues-Thurs & Sun 9am-4pm, Fri 9am-3pm; Rp1000) stands to the west of the Tanah Abang train station at Jalan Aipda KS Tubun 4. Catch bus #P16 heading north from Thamrin to the Tanah Abang market, then walk west for five minutes over the bridge. Housed in a spacious old Dutch villa, the well presented collection displays over three hundred indigenous textiles from every part of the archipelago. Eighteen kilometres south of Medan Merdeka, the Taman Mini Indonesia Indah (daily 8am-5pm; Rp4000) is a huge theme park celebrating the rich ethnic and cultural diversity of the archipelago. At its centre is a man-made lake, around which are 27 houses, each built in the traditional style of Indonesia's 27 provinces. The park also contains several museums (Rp1000-2000 each), including the Science Museum, the Asmat Museum, housing woodcarvings from Irian Jaya, and the Museum of Indonesia, with displays on the country's people, geography, flora and fauna. Neighbouring Museum Purna Bhakti Pertiwi (daily 9am-4pm; Rp4000) displays a fabulously opulent collection of stunning gifts presented to President Suharto. Highlights include a whole gamelan orchestra made of old Balinese coins, a series of carved wooden panels depicting Suharto's life story, and an enormous rubber-tree root decorated with the nine gods of Balinese Hinduism. To get to all these attractions, catch bus #P10, #P11 or #P16 to Rambutan bus station, then minibus #T19 or #M55 to the Taman Mini entrance (1hr total).
