Situated 910m up the forested western slopes of Gunung Lawu, Candi Sukuh (daily 6.15am-4.30pm; Rp300) is one of the most interesting of Java's classical temples. Catch a Kubening-bound bus from Karangpandan and hop off at Nglorok village (Rp300), where you buy your ticket for the temple. From here you can hire an ojek (Rp2500) for the steep two-kilometre journey. West-facing, pyramid-shaped Sukuh was built in around 1430, and seems to have been linked to a fertility cult . Although the temple is unadorned, there's an orgy of semi-explicit statuary lying nearby, with a few displaying impressive genitalia. There are also plenty of grotesque bas reliefs, many of them depicting scenes from the life of Bima, an incarnation of Shiva in the Mahabharata, who became the centre of a religious cult in the fifteenth century. The temple itself is fronted by the remains of a small ceremonial gateway, and three large turtles, their backs flattened to form three circular dais, stand on the third terrace, guarding the entrance to the temple proper.
