Candi Ceto , the youngest classical temple on Java, was built 1400m up on the northern flanks of Gunung Lawu in around 1470. Catch a bus from Karangpandan to Kalbening (Rp500), from where it's a steep two-hour climb (5km) up the mountainside. Isolated and frequently shrouded in mist, Candi Ceto has a mystical, almost eerie atmosphere. It was built on ten narrow terraces stretching up the mountainside, beyond a large monumental gateway, similar in style to those found on Bali. The first few terraces beyond the gate are bereft of decoration, though a giant bat has been carved on the paving on the fourth level. The bat carries on its back a large turtle, which in turn carries crabs, lizards and frogs on its shell. On the top three terraces, small kiosks shelter a variety of icons, including one of Bima, and yet another large lingam. The main temple, with the same pyramidal shape as Sukuh, stands on the very top terrace.
