Banyuwangi and Ferries To Bali
The town of BANYUWANGI has excellent transport links and is 8km south of KETAPANG , from where ferries run to Gilimanuk in Bali (every 30min; 30min; Rp1000) 24hr a day. There is a helpful East Java tourist office (daily 8am-7pm) inside the terminal building. There is a convenient Pelni agent on the main road opposite the Ketapang ferry terminal: Hariyono NPPS, Jl Gatot Suproto 165 (tel 0333/22523). The Pelni office is at Jalan Raya Situbondo (tel 0333/510325). Pelni ship KM Tatamailou calls at Banyuwangi every two weeks . You can also book tickets for the KM Dibonsolo, which calls at Benoa on Bali. There are several bus terminals serving Banyuwangi. The main long-distance terminal is Sri Tanjung , 2km north of Ketapang. If you're heading to Surabaya, you can either go around the north coast via Situbondo, or via Jember (further but more scenic); travel time on both routes is similar, at five to seven hours. On the northern edge of the town centre is the Blambangan microlet terminal and, 3km from the city centre on the southwestern edge, Brawijaya terminal. Microlets numbered 1, 2, 4 and 5 ply between Brawijaya and Blambangan, and yellow microlets 6 and 12 link Blambangan and Sri Tanjung, as do blue Kijang. They are known locally as Lin 1, Lin 2, and so on. There are several train stations serving Banyuwangi, the main one being Ketapang , just 500m from the ferry terminal. Book onward tickets here (9.30am-3pm). Trains run to and from Malang (daily; 5-6hr), Probolinggo (daily; 5-6hr), Surabaya (3 daily; 7hr) and Yogyakarta (daily; 15hr). The others are Argopura , near the Blambangan microlet terminal (get off here if you plan to stay in town), and Karangasem , which is on the western outskirts of town on the way up to Licin. The best places to stay are the popular Hotel Baru, Jl M.T. Hariyono 82-84 (tel 0333/21369; under $5), in a quiet central location, ten minutes' walk from the post office, and the more spacious Hotel Berlin Barat, Jl MT Hariyono 93 (tel 0333/21323; under $5), which is owned by the same people. There is a night market along Jalan Pattimura, otherwise try the Rumah Makan Hotel Baru, opposite Hotel Baru, or the Wina Restaurant, on the street side of Blambangan terminal at Jl Basuki Rachmat 62. For exchange , go to BCA at Jl Jend Sudirman 85-87 or BNI at Jl Banetrang 46. The post office , Jl Diponegoro 1 (Mon-Thurs 8am-3pm, Fri 8-11am, Sat 8am-1pm, Sun & hols 8am-noon), is on the west side of the sports field and has public Internet access. Just around the corner, off the southwest corner of the sports field, the 24hr Telkom office is at Jl Dr Sutomo 63 and there are plenty of wartels around town, including Jl Jaksa Agung Suprapto 130.
