Merak and Ferries To Sumatra
At the extreme northwestern tip of Java, MERAK is the port for ferries across the Sunda straits to Bakauheni on Sumatra. Ferries to Sumatra leave about every thirty minutes and take about two hours and thirty minutes; crowds of buses connect with the ferries to take you on to Bandar Lampung, Palembang or destinations further north in Sumatra. If you get stuck at Merak, the Hotel Anda at Jl Florida 4 has basic rooms with fan and mandi (tel 0254/71041; under $5).
