Essentially a dry-season expedition (from June to September or possibly October), the climb up Gunung Semeru (3676m), Java's highest mountain, is for fit, experienced trekkers only and requires good preparation and equipment. It takes at least three full days. The volcano is still active, with over 20,000 seismic events recorded in a typical year; in 1997, two climbers were killed by a big eruption which sent boulders flying out of the crater, so it is vital to take a guide and heed local advice. The path starts at the village of RANU PANE , to the north of the mountain, accessible by microlet and chartered jeep from Malang or Tumpang, or via a path across the Sea of Sand. In the village you need to check in at the PHPA office and get your permit (Rp2100). The PHPA office will also recommend porters (one per person at Rp30,000 each). Bring your own sleeping bag and tent, and rent a cooking stove in Ranu Pane. In the village, trekkers can stay in the Forest Guest House (under $5), where you'll need to cook for yourself, or there's a campsite near the PHPA office. If you don't want to make your own arrangements, a package trip from the Helios Hotel in Malang will run to about Rp500,000 (2-4 people) excluding transport and porters from Ranu Pane, but including a guide and equipment.
