The best spot for the sunrise across the entire Bromo area is Gunung Penanjakan (2770m). Leave Tosari or Wonokitri at around 4.30am to get to the lookout in time. The whole crater area lies below, Bromo smoking and Semeru puffing up regular plumes while the sun rises dramatically in the east. You can camp up here if you wish, but you'll be invaded before dawn by the hordes. To see the sunrise, either organize return transport from Wonokitri or Tosari (Rp60,000 per jeep, Rp25,000 motorcycle); do a loop to Penanjakan for the sunrise, across the Sea of Sand to Bromo and then back to Wonokitri or Tosari after you've climbed to the top; or (less popular) go to Penanjakan and Bromo and then on to Cemoro Lawang - it's Rp90,000 per jeep, Rp30,000 per motorcycle for either of the final two.
