Practicalities
Maumere has a square and a market at its centre, and much of the town is very close to the seafront. There are two bus terminals , both of which are notorious for pickpockets and con artists, so watch your pack. Buses to and from Ende, Moni and other destinations in the west use Terminal Barat or Ende terminal on the southwest outskirts of town, but may drop you off in the centre. Buses to and from Larantuka and other easterly destinations use the Terminal Lokaria , 3km east of the centre. A Rp300 bemo ride will get you into town. When it comes to moving on, most long-distance buses circle town several times before leaving, so ask locally first. Avoid having to fly out from Maumere outside of the high season: the unreliable Merpati agent is on Jalan Raja Don Tomas; the best Bouraq agent is PT Garuda on Jalan Moa Toda. Two banks change foreign currency: the BRI is on Jalan Pasar Baru Barat, but the BNI on Sukarno Hatta (Mon-Fri 7.30am-2.30pm, Sat 7.30am-11am) usually has better rates. The 24-hour Telkom office stands opposite. The post office is on Jalan Jenderal Achmad Yani (Mon-Thurs 7.30am-3pm, Fri 7.30-11.30am, Sat 7.30am-1pm). Toko Harapan Jaya on Jalan Moa Toda is the best art and weaving store in Flores, with piles of dusty blankets and sarongs as well as some carvings and jewellery.
