Ferries To Timor
LARANTUKA is the port town that serves the Solor and Alor archipelagos and Timor. The main part is centred alongside the road that runs parallel to the coast. The harbour lies roughly in the centre of the town, with a small market around the entrance. The harbour master's office, on the left as you enter the jetty, provides information in Bahasa Indonesia on all Pelni ships and ferries leaving from Larantuka area. Only the smaller boats leave from this harbour, however; ferries and Pelni ships leave from the Labuhan Besar pier about 5km south of town. Daily motorboats depart for Lewoleba (4hr; Rp4000) on Lembata , leaving at 8am and 2pm; there's also a weekly boat to Lamalera on Lembata (every Fri morning; 8hr; Rp7500). Ferries to Kupang leave on Mondays and Wednesdays at noon (12hr; Rp15,000). The Pelni ship KM Tatamilau calls at Labuhan Besar twice a month, coming from Kupang or Labuhanbajo. The KM Sirimau also calls every fortnight, coming from Kupang and going to Makassar and vice versa . Buses to and from Maumere take four hours. There is only one place for Westerners to stay in Larantuka: Hotel Rulies (tel 0383/21198; a), southeast of the pier. If you're arriving from the west ask your bus to drop you off here. It's clean and friendly enough, with shared facilities. The Hotel Tresna (tel 0383/21072; under $5), next door, might take you if Rulies is full. Several average Padang warung line the main road, but by far the best place to eat is the Nirwhana, opposite Hotel Sederhana. The BNI bank is on the unnamed second road back from and parallel to the sea, heading towards Maumere; the BRI is on Jalan Piere Tandeau, around the corner from their disused old building and a short walk southeast of the harbour. Don't count on being able to change currency anywhere east of here except Kupang.
