Singaraja

The second largest Balinese city after Denpasar, SINGARAJA is a pleasantly spacious harbour on the north coast, of most interest to tourists for its good transport connections. There are three bemo and bus terminals in Singaraja. Sukasada (locally called Sangket), to the south of the town, serves Danau Bratan and Denpasar; Banyuasri , on the western edge of town, serves the west, including Lovina, Seririt and Gilimanuk; and Penarukan is for services eastwards along the north coast via Tulamben to Amlapura and along the Kintamani/Penelokan road for the Batur area and on to Bangli. Small bemos (flat rate Rp1000) ply main routes around town.

The tourist office is south of the town centre at Jl Veteran 23 (Mon-Thurs 7am-2pm, Fri 7am-noon, Sat 7am-12.30pm; tel 0362/25141). As Lovina is just 6km west of Singaraja, there's little reason to stay, but Sentral (tel 0362/21896; under $10), Jl Jen Achmad Yani 48, and Losmen Darma Setu (tel 0362/23200; under $5), Jl Jen Achmad Yani 46A, reached via a small lane to

the east of Sentral, both offer straightforward rooms, while the Wijaya, Jl Sudirman 74 (tel 0362/21915; under $20), has the widest range of rooms and is conveniently close to Banyuasri terminal. The night market is in the Jalan Durian area. Singaraja has several hospitals , including Rumah Sakit Umum (the public hospital), Jalan Ngurah Rai (tel 0362/22046) and Rumah Sakit Kerta Usada (a private hospital that also has a dentist), Jl Jen Achmad Yani 108 (tel 0362/22396).
