Bali Gilimanuk and Ferries To Java

Gilimanuk and Ferries To Java

Situated on the westernmost tip of Bali, less than 3km from East Java, the small, ribbon-like town of GILIMANUK is used by visitors mainly as a transit point for boats to and from Java. Ferries shuttle constantly between Gilimanuk and Ketapang, near Banyuwangi (every 20min day and night; 30min). Tickets (Rp1400) must be bought before boarding from the desks in the terminal buildings. If you're travelling quite a way into Java, to Probolinggo (for Mount Bromo) for example, or to Surabaya, Yogyakarta or Jakarta, the easiest option is to get an all-inclusive ticket from your starting point in Bali. The cheapest long-distance buses travel out of Denpasar's Ubung bemo station, but there are also more convenient tourist shuttle buses and bus and train combinations operating from major tourist centres across Bali. Ticket prices always include the ferry crossing.

Getting to Gilimanuk by bemo from almost any major town in north, south and west Bali is straightforward. All bemos terminate at the bemo station in the town centre, ten minutes' walk from the ferry terminal or a short dokar ride. From Denpasar (128km southwest) and the southern beaches, take either the direct dark-green bemos from Denpasar's Ubung terminal or a Gilimanuk-bound bus. From Singaraja (88km northeast), dark-red bemos run to Gilimanuk, as do a few buses.

Accommodation in Gilimanuk itself is not at all traveller-oriented, and the most appealing places are on the edge of town, about 2km south of the port along the road to Cekik, or 1.5km north of the Bali Barat National Park headquarters. Here, Pondok Wisata Lestari (tel 0365/61504; under $15) has a range of losmen rooms and a reasonably good restaurant; 50m north of Wisata Lestari, Sari (tel 0365/61264; $5-15) has decent rooms in two-storey bamboo bungalows. If you want to stay near the port, Nusantarra 2 (no phone; $5-15) offers shabby rooms about five minutes' walk from the ferry terminal, or more expensive shared bungalows another five minutes' walk around the bay. To get there from the ferry terminal, walk a few metres to

your right, then cross the road and take the first turning on your left; if you miss that one there's another access road 50m further on, beside the police station. If Nusantarra 2 is full, try Kartika Candra (under $5), Nusantarra 1 (under $5) or Surya (under $5), which are all on the main road, about fifteen minutes' walk south of the ferry terminal, less than five minutes from the bemo station. You can change money at the bank opposite the bemo terminal.
