Home of Dewi Danu, the goddess of the crater lake, Danau Batur is especially sacred to the Balinese, and the waters from the lake, generated by eleven springs, are believed to percolate through the earth and reappear as springs in other parts of the island. Situated 500m below the crater rim, Danau Batur is the largest lake in Bali, 8km long and 3km wide, and one of the most glorious. The most popular road to the lakeside, served by public bemos , leaves the crater rim at Penelokan. Bemos, in theory, go as far as Songan on the western side of the lake and Abang on the eastern side, but you'll have to bargain hard to get reasonable fares beyond Toya Bungkah and Buahan; most tourists end up paying Rp5000 or more to get to Toya Bungkah.
