Every visitor to Yunnan at some point finds themselves in Kunming , the province's comfortable, fair-weather capital and transport hub. Though the city initially appears blandly modern, its character is partially salvaged by surrounding temples and fine lake-and-limestone-hill landscapes. Southeast , both road and rail extend all the way down to the Vietnamese border , taking you within striking distance of some fine scenery, old architecture, and some offbeat sights to slow you down en route to the crossing.
