One of the most pleasant areas of China to explore randomly, eastern Sichuan is focused around Chengdu , the relaxed provincial capital. Famed not least for its fiery cuisine, the city offers a number of worthwhile day trips to nearby scenic and historic sights, the most unusual of which is a two-thousand-year-old irrigation scheme at Dujiangyan . Northeast is a little-noticed but historically important route to Shaanxi ; southwest, both road and rail run past Buddhist landmarks at Emei Shan and Leshan and down to the Yunnanese

border via Xichang . Southeast of the capital, the historic towns of Zigong and Yibin offer access to picturesque bamboo forests, and traces of an obscure, long-vanished society. East of Chengdu, further Buddhist sites surround the country town of Dazu , and beyond, western China's largest city, Chongqing , marks the start of the journey down the Yangzi to Hubei Province, with ferries exiting the region through the dramatic Three Gorges .
