There's considerably less of interest once you get away from the historic canal towns in the south of Jiangsu Province. Although the canal north of the Yangzi is - in season - navigable all the way to the borders of Shandong, and occasionally even as far as the Yellow River, and there are now ambitious plans to dredge deep enough to allow large vessels access at least as far as the major rail junction and heavily industrialized mining city of Xuzhou in northwestern Jiangsu, the only thing people are likely to be transporting in this area is coal. There is no tourist traffic along here, and frankly not a great deal to see. For the most part, the country is flat and wet, ideal for
salt panning but little else. Of the towns in the area, none positively demands attention, though tiny, rural Huai'an , birthplace of Zhou Enlai, is an attractive old place, and Xuzhou is home to the excellent Han Dynasty Tomb, while Lianyungang , strangely isolated on the northern coast, offers a mixture of sea atmosphere, hill temples and 1930s architecture, from the time when completion of the rail line from Zhengzhou brought wealth and trade to the port.
