Out of the centre on Zhongshan Dong Lu, about 3km east of Xinjiekou (buses #5 and #9 from Xinjiekou; #20 from Gulou) is the huge Nanjing Museum (Tues-Sun 9-11.45am & 1.30-4.45pm; Y10, students Y5), one of the best provincial museums in China, especially in terms of clarity of explanations - nearly everything is labelled in English. Its highlights include some superb examples of silk-embroidered sedan chairs and several heavy cast bronzes, dating from as early as the Western Zhou (1100-771 BC). The jade and lacquerwork sections, as well as the model Fujian trading ships, are also well worth seeing.

The spectacular facade a few hundred metres west of the museum - in the direction of Xinjiekou - belongs to Gugong Park (daily 6am-11pm; Y1), the site of the former imperial palace of the Ming dynasty. Clearly this was once a colossal structure, perhaps something on the scale of the Forbidden City in Beijing, but today, once through the entrance it's little short of a wasteland, with only a small exhibition hall at the back displaying a model of the original palace.

A short walk east of the museum

is Zhongshan Men , the eastern-most gate of the ancient city walls. You can climb up to the top of the wall here, and walk along a little way to the north before the structure crumbles into a small lake, Qian Hu. It's surprisingly spacious and peaceful on the top and affords excellent views. In the morning, you can watch many of Nanjing's elders doing their daily exercises on the top of the wall, almost perfectly in sync with the traditional music blaring from a small portable stereo.
