2km south of Xinjiekou is the Fuzi Miao (Temple of Confucius) area, which begins south of Jiankang Lu, around the bottom end of Taiping Lu, and harbours pedestrian walkways, street vendors, boutiques blaring Chinese techno, tourist kitsch, interesting little restaurants and an attractive waterfront area (where the Tang poet Liu Yuxi composed his most famous poem, Wuyi Lane), from where you can pick up canal leisure boats (Y10) that trundle south to Zhonghua Men. On a hot day, nothing beats slurping on a ludou shatou (green bean shaved ice drink, Y3) from one of the stalls along the streets. The central Temple of Confucius itself, which resembles a Disney Confucian theme park inside, complete with mannequins in fancy dress, is hardly worth bothering about, but cross the canal in front of the temple, and a short walk southeast brings you to a small park, Bailuzhou (Egret Isle). This ancient corner of the city remained the Chinese quarter after the arrival of the Manchu Qing dynasty in the seventeenth century, and it is still full of traditional houses.
and right on the small Zhanyuan Lu, just east of Zhonghua Lu, is the Taiping Heavenly Kingdom History Museum (daily 7am-5pm; Y6), located in the former residence of Xu Da, a Ming prince, and well worth a visit. The sad but fascinating story of the Taiping Uprising, which culminated in the occupation of Nanjing by rebels from 1853 to 1864, is told here in pictures and relics, with English captions. The building itself was the residence of one of the rebel generals during the uprising.
