On the eastern side of Renmin Lu, 500m south of the train station, is Guangzhou's massive Export Commodities Hall (bus #31), venue for the biannual Chinese Export Commodities Fair (April & October). First held in 1957 to encourage Western investments, today it's used as more of a showcase for Chinese tractors, plastic buckets and cheap clothing, though business dealings continue behind the scenes. Outside of fair times, the building becomes the "Foreign Trade Centre Store", full of lounge suites, imported jeans and perfume, and a motley collection of Chinese souvenirs.
