About a kilometre south of Guangxiao Si, Haizhu Lu is crossed by Guangta Lu, and turning east along it almost immediately brings you to the walls surrounding Huaisheng Mosque and its grey, conical tower, Guangta (Ximen Kou or Gongyuan Qian metro). This is possibly the world's oldest minaret outside Mecca and something of a stylistic fossil for Islamicists, said by some to have been built by Abu Waqas in the seventh century. It's also the only surviving part of the original mosque, as the rest was restored during the Ming dynasty. Both buildings are closed to non-Muslims, but there is little to see inside except a few prayer mats and whitewashed walls. During the fifteenth century, Huaisheng's environs were known as Fanfang , the foreigners' quarter; today there is a smattering of halal canteens and restaurants in the vicinity.
