Right in the foothills of the Fujian border, 200km north of Chaozhou on the Guangzhou-Shantou rail line, MEIZHOU (also known as Meixian ) has three claims to fame: a nationally renowned football team; the province's best middle school outside Guangzhou; and the original home of a huge number of Overseas Chinese, whose descendants have begun to pump an enormous quantity of money back into the region. While not a pretty city, Meizhou is also home to the Hakka , and it's a fine place to pick up local background before heading off into their Fujian heartlands - if you can't make it out that far, a nearby mountain temple makes a good excuse for a quick trip.
