The southern part of the city, down towards the river, contains another dusting of sights. Awkwardly located just east off Liuyi Lu, the north-south express road to the east of Wusi/Wuyi Lu, is the flower and bird market (bus #8 from Gutian Lu), packed at weekends with people buying cagebirds and puppies. Farther south, right by the river, several pedestrianized streets are crammed with shoppers, especially the small, old-style streets between the southern ends of Bayiqi Lu and Wuyi Lu, and Rongcheng Gujie just east of Wuyi Lu. Right on the riverfront itself, facing the southern end of Wuyi Lu, you'll find the kiosk (8.30am-4.30pm; tel 0591/3277388) selling advance tickets for the Min River boat tour . This is a great trip, similar to the better-known Shanghai Huangpu River tours, in which the boat proceeds slowly to the mouth of the river and back again, offering views of barges, freighters and all the paraphernalia of river life. The tour lasts from 7.30am to 5pm and costs Y28 but runs only when there is sufficient demand - most probable during the summer and at weekends. The tours leave from the Taijiang dock, just below the kiosk. The area south of the river, including the small mid-river island Zhongzhou (reached from Jiefang Bridge), is worth a wander if you're in the vicinity. The former foreign concession was based here and you can still see some of the old banks, consulates, residences and churches. A random stroll along the south bank and the neighbouring streets will uncover any number of buildings in the colonial style with verandahs and shuttered windows. Bus #1 coming down Bayiqi Lu from Xi Hu Park crosses to the south bank.
