Fuzhou's most highly touted tourist attraction is Gu Shan (Drum Mountain), about 9km east of the city. To get here catch one of the regular buses from the Chating bus station (Y5), or a minibus from Wuyi Square (Y12). It's an attractive 45-minute journey through forested hills with sweeping views as the road starts climbing. The Gu Shan area offers walks through the woods as well as scattered sights, including the thousand-year-old (but heavily restored) Yongquan Si which gets phenomenally crowded at weekends. One way to escape the crowds is to climb the 2500 stone steps behind the temple to the wooded summit of Gu Shan.
