Mountain Practicalities
Changbai Shan rewards detailed exploration. Head any distance from the obvious paths, and you're quickly swallowed up in the wilderness. Settlements are few and far between, though, and the only roads are dirt tracks, so don't wander too far unless you know what you're doing. Be especially careful when hiking around Tian Chi, as the lake straddles the Chinese-North Korean border. The line was ordered to be demarcated by Chairman Mao during the height of patriotism during the Cultural Revolution. The catch, however, is that the line isn't clearly marked by signs. Be sure to ask around in the village for the latest information on the situation. The weather in the region is not kind and can change very suddenly. In summer, torrential rain is common, mist makes it impossible to see far and the buildings at the summit often lose their electricity supply. That said, a trip is really only practical in the summer months as winter temperatures can drop very low, and snow makes the roads in and out completely impassable. Before going it's wise to get a weather report by asking at a branch of CITS. Public transport is restricted to between June and September, and you should generally be all right at this time, but don't make a trip if the rains are heavy, as the roads may flood and trap you on the mountain. At other times of the year, you'll have to rent a jeep. If you're planning to stay any length of time, good preparation and the right equipment are essential. Bring insect repellent, tiger balm (for bites), walking boots, waterproof clothing and a sweater. You'll also need a flashlight, a good sleeping bag and all-weather gear if you're planning to camp.
