It's a long and boring thirty-minute walk from the northern end of Qianmen Dajie down to the Natural History Museum (daily 8.30am-4pm; Y10), a few blocks farther south; take bus #17 or #20. After dry halls of stuffed wildlife and plastic dinosaurs, prepare yourself for a shock on the top floor, where a ghoulish display on human anatomy has gained museum cult status among travellers with a taste for the macabre. Pickled legs, arms, brains and babies are arranged around the stars of the show, two whole corpses, a woman wearing socks, gloves and a hood, and a man with all his skin removed, leaving just the fingernails and lips. You can recover in the soothing surroundings of Tiantan Park whose western gate is just south of here. The only other reason to head into the rambling sprawl farther south is to find a cheap hotel, although if you're in the area, Taoranting Park (daily 6am-7pm; Y0.2) on Taiping Jie, to the west, with its hills, woods and pavilions, is a pleasant little place, where you may hear old people passing the time by singing Beijing Opera.
