The area north of Tian'anmen Square has a scattered collection of sights, many of them remnants of the imperial past, when this area was the home of princes, dukes and monks. The finest remaining palace is Prince Gong's , buried in Beijing's best preserved hutongs north of Beihai Park , the imperial pleasure park, while the finest temple, the Yonghe Gong , is in the northern outskirts of the centre. Other illustrious residents are more recent; in the northwest, the twentieth-century homes of the writer Lu Xun and the artist Xu Beihong are open as museums. For a general picture of the state of the Chinese arts, visit the China Art Gallery just north of Wangfujing.
