The section at Huanghua , northeast of the capital, is completely unreconstructed, no one will charge you an entrance fee or try to sell you a T-shirt, and you can hike along the wall for as long as you feel like, though some sections, among them the first, are a little tricky for the leaden-footed. It's also not too hard to get here: take bus #918 to the town of Huairou (Y8) from Dongzhimen bus station, and from there catch a minibus taxi, which should cost a further Y10, but ask around as drivers may charge foreigners a lot more. You'll be dropped off on a road that cuts through the wall. The section to the left is too difficult to climb, but the section on the right-hand side, over a little reservoir, shouldn't present too many hazards and gets easier as you go, with the wall levelling off along a ridge. If you want to camp out, this is the section to head for. To get back to Huairou, walk back along the road for five minutes to a bridge where local taxis congregate (Y10). The last bus from Huairou to Beijing is at 6.30pm. You can see another wild and rarely visited section at Jiugulou , about forty kilometres north of Huairou. A taxi from Huairou will cost about Y60.
