Brunei's main ecotourism effort is focused on the Temburong District , a sparsely populated part of the state which is only accessible by boat from Bandar. It has been isolated from the rest of Brunei since 1884, when the strip of land to the west was ceded to Sarawak. The area's chief attractions are the superb Ulu Temburong National Park and the chance to stay in Malay and Murut kampungs or Iban longhouses . The starting point for both of these is the district's only town of any size, Bangar.
