Around two kilometres south of Malolotja, on the Mbabane road, lies the Hawane Dam Nature Reserve (tel 4424241; Mon-Fri free, Sat & Sun E10), a small area around the northern end of the Hawane Dam, designed to protect part of the Black Umbuluzi River wetlands. Hawane's main attraction is its wealth of birdlife , and there's an excellent trail for bird-watching. A little further on is Hawane African Adventure Trails (tel 4043375 or 6021911, ), signposted down a track, a good option if you fancy exploring the attractive surrounding countryside on horseback. They have a range of ponies and horses for trails lasting anything between a couple of hours and a week. There's also a base-camp, with around half-a-dozen comfortable bee-hive huts sleeping two people (full-board; R150-200); this accommodation is available even if you're not riding.
