If you leave the Medina by the Kasbah Gate, a ten- to fifteen-minute walk along Rue Asad Ibn Farrat and then Rue Mohammed Tazi will bring you to the quarter known as la Marshan , an exclusive residential quarter with a rich spread of villas, consulates and royal properties. After the grand Italian Consulate , and opposite the stadium, is a large school, to the right of which a lane, too narrow for a car, leads to the Cafe Halfa . The steep hillside is terraced and from the cafe, shaded by shrubs and trees, there are stunning views over the straits. Serving coffee, mint tea, sandwiches and cakes, this is just the place to spend the late afternoon - as did Paul Bowles and his friends, Tennessee Williams, Truman Capote and Jack Kerouac.
