With summer temperatures of 34 to 38°C - and peaks well above that - it seems best to devote at least the middle of a Marrakesh day to total inactivity. A good place to do so is one of the city's gardens. There are two - the Agdal and Menara - designed for just this purpose. Each begins near the edge of the Medina, rambles through acres of orchards and olive groves and has, near its centre, an immense, lake-size pool of water. This is all - they are not flower gardens, but, cool and completely still, they seem both satisfying and luxurious, and in perfect contrast to the close city streets. Majorelle , which should on no account be missed, and those of the fabled Hotel La Mamounia . With the exception of La Mamounia , you will want transport to get to any of these gardens - either a petit taxi or caleche. If you are considering a caleche trip at any stage, the Agdal or Menara are the perfect destinations. Alternatively, to take in both gardens and tour the ramparts and palmery, you could rent a bike or charter a grand taxi for the day.
