Walking down to Fes El Djedid from Bab Boujeloud involves a shift in scale. Gone are the labyrinthine alleyways and souks of the Medina, to be replaced by a massive expanse of walls. Within them, to your left, are a series of gardens: the private Jardins Beida , behind the Lycee, and then the public Jardins de Boujeloud with their pools diverted from the Oued Fes. The latter have an entrance towards the end of the long Avenue des Francais, and are a vital lung for the old city. If everything gets too much, wander in, lounge about on the grass, and spend an hour or two at the tranquil cafe , by an old waterwheel, at their west corner.
