The four trails we've described represent only the most obvious and well-trodden of the mountain's hiking possibilities. All ground above 3200m is within the boundaries of the national park and, with time and sufficient food (and money to pay park fees), you could hike the moors and highland zone for weeks. On the north side, a very rarely used route leads up from Timau through dense forest, for which a guide, a good map and accurate orienteering skills are essential. The southern flanks of the mountain seem to have largely escaped the notice of hikers, but there are several forest stations in the vicinity of Embu and plenty of scope for exploration - the Kamweti route is

a possibility. Most of the southern slopes were a designated "Kikuyu reserve" during the colonial period, so few European climbers created routes up here. A warning : hiking in the forests, though feasible, is absolutely not advised unless you're with a guide; it's easy to get hopelessly lost, as a number of apocryphal tales circulating tell. Hyena and other hungry or bad-tempered beasts abound, and without serious jungle or rainforest experience, you're asking for trouble.
