Nowadays, it's mainly tourists who retread their steps: some 15,000 each year. Few of them, it seems, particularly respect, never mind venerate, the old mountain god, and several dozen tonnes of rubbish are left on its sides every year, only part of which is removed (mainly by boy scouts and other voluntary groups).
