The oasis's other populous centres - Sinnuris, Ibshaway, Itsa and Tamiya - hold little interest. However, there are enjoyable scenic spots easily accessible from Fayoum City in the form of the springs of Ain es-Siliyin and Lake Qaroun . Reaching the waterfalls of Wadi Raiyan or the seldom-visited ancient sites on the periphery of the oasis is more tricky, so don't undertake a jaunt lightly nor set off without adequate water and food for the day - you can't rely on finding either in the remoter places. Perhaps the best way of getting around is to rent a bicycle (GBPE15), motorbike (GBPE40) or car (GBPE70) for the day from the Montazah Hotel. Otherwise, you can rent a private taxi, or rely on service taxis, covered pick-ups (with fixed fares and routes) or local buses. Pick-ups and taxi drivers frequently overcharge, so it's wise to check fares beforehand and pay with the exact money. Having said that, rural truck drivers often carry hitchhikers for free, and it's worth trying to flag down anything that moves. Aside from being alert for tractors, children and livestock, drivers should take care in visiting the remoter sites. You'll need a car with high ground clearance, if not 4WD; adequate water (for humans and radiators); and shovels and traction mats or boards (for digging cars out of soft sand). Always travel with at least one other car and heed local advice about the weather; never travel during the khamseen.
