Visiting The Delta
As few visitors have time for more than one moulid or site, we've dealt with the region in less detail than other parts of Egypt. Depending on where you're aiming for, it might be better to start from Alex, Cairo or the Canal Zone: Rosetta and Damanhur are easiest to reach from Alex; Tanta from Cairo; and Zagazig from Ismailiya in the Canal Zone. There are direct buses from Cairo to the Delta resorts over summer. In some cases, a shortage of local accommodation makes day trips more feasible than overnight stays. Trains are OK for reaching major towns, but service taxis and buses are the best way of getting around . Renting a car isn't necessarily a good idea: it's easy to have accidents on the Delta roads, and the minor ones are legally off limits to foreign drivers - a hangover from 1960s spy-phobia. Should the police decide to make a fuss, you could conceivably spend a night in jail.
